Are You Struggling with Overwhelming Memories or Intense Anxiety?

If you're here, it’s likely because certain memories or intense feelings keep resurfacing, disrupting your life in ways that feel overwhelming. Flashbacks, vivid memories, or sudden waves of anxiety keep pulling you back into painful experiences from the past. Specific places, people, and activities trigger distressing thoughts or emotions so you just try to avoid them all together.

It’s possible that you feel the weight of these experiences in other areas of your life as well. Trauma can affect not only your mental health but also your relationships, career, sleep patterns, and self-esteem. Not only that, but it can be isolating because you feel like no one fully understands what you’re going through. You’re wondering…is healing really possible?

Many People Carry the Lingering Effects of Trauma With Them

Many people struggle with the effects of past traumas, whether these experiences stem from childhood, accidents, loss, or other significant life events. According to studies, an estimated 70% of people experience trauma at some point in their lives, and many face lasting emotional effects. Mental health problems, anxiety, PTSD and even problems with your physical health can be common responses to unresolved trauma.

Anxiety, hypervigilance, flashbacks, and avoidance behaviors are all very natural, understandable responses to difficult or traumatic experiences. Your brain is doing its best to keep you safe.

These symptoms most likely affect your daily life, like struggling with sleep due to nightmares or feeling "on edge" without knowing why. Trauma can cause an invisible ripple effect, often resulting in physical and emotional exhaustion, strained relationships, and feeling isolated. i’ll You’re not broken or weak for feeling this way. Through EMDR therapy, our EMDR therapists at RelationshipStore will guide you on a path to processing and healing from your painful experiences.

How EMDR Works: A Gentle, Structured Approach to Healing Trauma

EMDR is a research-backed approach that can help you process and heal from distressing memories. The therapy’s core process—known as bilateral stimulation—helps “unlock” and reprocess stored memories that continue to trigger emotional pain. This allows you to revisit difficult memories in a way that feels safe and manageable, helping you to move forward without the same level of emotional intensity.

When you experience trauma, the brain sometimes “freezes” memories, storing them in a way that prevents natural processing. This is why these memories feel just as intense, raw, and vivid as when they first happened. EMDR helps to “unblock” these memories, allowing the brain to reprocess them in a more adaptive way. Here’s how the process unfolds with your EMDR therapist at RelationshipStore.

  1. Creating a Safe Foundation
Before starting EMDR, your therapist will work with you to establish a strong foundation of trust and comfort. Trauma therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you’re worried about revisiting painful experiences.  That’s why the first phase of EMDR involves preparing you with relaxation techniques, grounding exercises, and coping strategies. This ensures that when we start the actual EMDR process, you have the tools and resources to handle any strong emotions that might come up. We’ll discuss any fears or hesitations you may have and address them, making sure that you feel in control of the process.

  2. Identifying Target Memories
In the initial phases, we’ll work together to identify the specific memories, experiences, or beliefs that continue to cause you distress. This doesn’t mean you need to relive the trauma in detail. Instead, we’ll focus on pinpointing the emotions, beliefs, and physical sensations that are tied to these memories. For example, if you were in a car accident, we might focus on any images, feelings of panic, or sensations that come up when you think about driving.

  3. Bilateral Stimulation
The unique aspect of EMDR is its use of “bilateral stimulation.” This means activating both sides of your brain through methods like guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones. While you focus on a specific memory, your therapist will guide you through these movements, such as following their finger from side to side. The process is similar to what happens in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, a time when the brain processes emotions and memories.

  4. Reprocessing and Reducing Emotional Intensity
During bilateral stimulation, you may notice that the memory starts to feel less overwhelming, as though you’re observing it from a distance. The brain begins to naturally reprocess the memory, shifting it from a vivid, intense experience into a more neutral memory that no longer triggers the same intense emotions. Over multiple sessions, you will likely find that painful memories gradually lose their grip on you.

  5. Integrating New Beliefs and Strengthening Resilience
We will also work to reinforce positive, empowering beliefs that support your healing journey. For example, a person who once felt “I am powerless” may come to feel “I am strong and in control.” This mindset shift allows you to replace negative self-perceptions with healthier, more compassionate beliefs about yourself.

  6. Moving Forward
Many clients find that after EMDR, they no longer feel triggered by certain memories or situations that used to bring them so much stress. Clients often describe feeling like a “weight has been lifted.”
